Itinerant Bushcraft Course – Journey Skills for Adventurers

Ready to reconnect with nature and gain real-world wilderness skills? The Itinerant Bushcraft Course by Living by Nature is a 3-day immersive training in the woods. You’ll learn practical survival techniques like fire making, shelter building, navigation, and foraging—skills every modern adventurer needs.

This hands-on weekend course is designed for people who want to feel truly at home in the wild. Whether you’re planning long hikes, backcountry travel, or just want to become more self-reliant in nature, this course lays the foundation. You’ll leave knowing how to:

  • Build and set up a camp using natural and modern materials
  • Light a fire in wet weather conditions
  • Read the landscape and stay safe in woodland terrain
  • Prepare meals over an open fire—including wild game when available

What You Will Learn

  • Tool safety and selection: knife, saw, axe & bow saw (tools provided)
  • Cutting techniques: for pegs, pot hangers, feather-sticks
  • Tarp skills & knots: setting up comfortable tarp shelters
  • Optional: sleep in a natural shelter
  • Fire lighting: reliable methods in all weather
  • Woodland awareness: shelter site selection, risk assessment
  • Plant and tree ID: + intro to foraging and natural navigation
  • Navigation basics: map and compass use
  • Campfire cooking: including game prep (fish, rabbit, squirrel, pigeon)
  • Natural cordage: making your own rope from wild materials
  • Bannock & breakfast fire tips: start your day right in the woods
  • Water purification: sourcing, filtering, boiling
  • Tool maintenance: keeping your sharps field-ready

Course Details

🕒 Times
The course runs from 11:00 AM on Friday to 4:30 PM on Sunday.

💷 Price
£295 per person
Each adult participant receives a free Mora knife to use during the course — and take home as a gift.

👥 Group Size

We keep our group small — maximum 9 participants — to create a quiet, focused atmosphere in the woods and ensure you get plenty of one-on-one time with the instructor.


🎒 What to Bring

A detailed kit list will be provided upon booking, but in essence, all you need is:

  • A sleeping bag

  • Warm, weather-appropriate clothing


🥘 Food & Catering

This course is fully catered, starting with dinner on Friday and ending with lunch on Sunday.
✔️ Please bring your own packed lunch for Friday.
✔️ Let us know about any dietary requirements — we’ll do our best to accommodate you. For more specific diets, we may ask you to bring a few of your own essentials.


👶 Age Requirements

Due to the immersive and physical nature of this course, it is generally not suitable for children under 16.
Participants under 18 must be accompanied by a participating adult.
If you’re unsure whether the course is right for your child, feel free to contact us — we’re happy to advise.


🌲 Location

The course takes place in a beautiful, private woodland on the Harewood Estate near Harrogate.
Exact directions will be sent with your booking confirmation.
