3-Day Buckskin Tanning Course – Make Natural Leather by Hand

Buckskin Tanning Course

Learn to make leather 100% naturally – without chemicals, just tradition and your own hands.

Ancient Craft, Timeless Purpose

Since the earliest days of humankind, we have clothed ourselves using materials from nature. Among the most enduring is buckskin – soft, breathable leather made from animal hides. At Living by Nature, we primarily work with hides from red deer, roe deer, and fallow deer.

Used for thousands of years across the globe, buckskin is known for its strength and silence – ideal for moving quietly through nature. Native American tribes crafted intricate garments from it, and even today it is worn by Indigenous peoples such as the Inuit and the Sámi. Beyond clothing, buckskin was – and still is – used to make bags, pouches, carrying gear, and more.

From Hide to Buckskin: A Hands-On Journey

Turning a raw hide into soft, strong buckskin is an intensive but deeply rewarding process. During this 3-day course, you will follow each step – from fleshing and graining to softening and smoking the leather.

By the end of the course, you’ll go home with a finished hide that is tough, breathable, and incredibly soft – outperforming many modern textiles in comfort and durability.

🔍 What Will You Learn?

  • De-fleshing: Removing meat and fat residues – a physical but crucial first step.
  • De-graining: Stripping away the outer layer to reveal the soft inner fiber structure.
  • Dressing: Treating the hide using brain material* or a natural alternative.
  • Softening: Stretching and working the hide until it becomes completely supple.
  • Smoking: Fixing the tanning process and making the leather water-resistant and long-lasting.

*For participants who prefer not to use brains, a natural alternative is available.
